Devil's Elbow Campground

Name: Devil's Elbow Campground

Devil's Elbow Campground is situated along the Coeur d'Alene River on flat land in a mature forest. The river is shallow on the campground bank and deeper on the far bank. It is great if you want to let your kids play in the water but keep an eye on them as the far side is several feet deep.

Campsites: There are 20 campsites plus the group area. The host is in site 18. There are only 6 campsites which may be reserved plus the group area. The roads and driveways are paved. Each site has a fire ring with attached grill, a picnic table and a barbecue stand.

Host on Site: Yes, for 2013 it was Butch and Sharon.

Restroom: We gave the Devil's Elbow outhouses the "Cleanest Outhouse" award for 2013. Nice job, Butch and Sharon.

Picnic Area: There is a day use fee for the campground of $9 per day so if you find a campsite open one could have a picnic.

Recreation: Floating, rafting and kayaking the Coeur d'Alene River as well as fly fishing for cutthroat trout are the primary activities. However there are trails to hike, Fern Shadow Falls to view and any photographer would find many worthy subject to shoot. I found this rafting outfitter but am sure there are others.

Fishing: Fishing is available in the Coeur d'Alene River. I didn't fish but I hear the fly fishing for cutthroat trout is great. Check the regulation here.

Boating: Rafting and kayaking is available downstream where you will find class I to class III rapids.

Wildlife: We saw a moose in the river near the group area and one could also see deer. Elk, bear and even wolves live in these mountains. Use care in the disposal of and storage of your food.
